Lawren S. Harris

Afternoon Sun, North Shore, Lake Superior

1924
In autumn 1921 Harris, accompanied by A.Y. Jackson, made the first of many trips to the north shore of Lake Superior. To document what he believed was the spiritual essence of northern Ontario, Harris began to paint in a more simplified and abstract manner. In this painting, however, he has retained a naturalistic treatment of the sunlight on the water.
