It is well known that Francis Bacon, a homosexual, was fascinated by Eadweard Muybridge's photographic studies of bodies in motion, and used these scientific documents as sources for his own, often quite erotic paintings of men. Cohen intended her photographs of wrestlers as quotations of Bacon's paintings of coupled figures. Employing purely photographic means such as slow shutter speed to blur the images, she sought to capture the painterly sensuousness and erotic atmosphere of the paintings. The sequencing of the images, which track the movements of the wrestlers, is a direct reference to Muybridge's scientific method. Cohen's subject is a synthesis of Bacon's paintings and Muybridge's photographs, seen through a woman's eyes.
