Activity Cell with Warlock Bass Guitar

1997
Shearer’s work explores the ways we consume, or even mythologize, certain musical subcultures. This sculpture recalls teenage leisure zones – such as the rec room or basement – of seventies-style suburban houses, and is based on a photograph of a similar structure the artist found in a home-decoration book titled Teenager’s Rooms (1969). The more laid-back and positive associations of this utopic construction are contrasted with the heavy-metal guitar, which speaks instead to teenage rebellion and angst.
