Elaine Ling

Abandoned, Namib Desert II

1998, printed 1999
Category:
With Polaroid negatives, Elaine Ling calls attention to the process of image making by allowing the rough edges and peeled emulsion to stand in the final print. The strong formal quality of her work often allows the images to operate as both documents and visual poetics. Through her attentiveness to such aesthetic elements as the interplay between positive and negative elements, and the precise framing of her subject matter, Ling allows the viewer to appreciate the remarkable within the ordinary. Her work also explores the intersections of nature and culture and the ambiguous spaces that result from humankind’s attempts to impose order and structure on natural spaces.
