Francisco Goya y Lucientes

A Young Witch Flying on a Rope Swing

c. 1824-1828
In addition to preparatory drawings for his prints, Goya also made drawings that he kept in bound albums, apparently just for himself. The " Young Witch " and the " Death of Anton Requena " both come from Goya's last drawing album, made while he was in exile in Bordeaux during the final years of his life. The woman sails magically through the air on a rope held in her hands, aided only by the wings on her shoes. Nothing else about her suggests she might be a witch, but the distinction between seductive young women and witches is often blurred in Goya's work.
