Thomas Rowlandson
A Meeting of the Members of the Jockey Club at Newmarket
c. 1811
The Jockey Club was founded in about 1750 to regulate racing, and its membership included the richest and most influential men in England. The man at the centre of this scene is probably the Prince Regent, later George IV, among whose many vices gambling was perhaps the least offensive. Rowlandson was himself no stranger to gambling, having squandered a considerable inheritance in his earlier years.
