Peter Doig

2001
Peter Doig infuses the landscape genre with a sense of contemporaneity by depicting ambiguous, hallucinatory vistas that fall somewhere between reality and the imagined. These scenes – derived from photographs, photocopies and popular music ephemera – evoke an indefinable mood, and are not necessarily of specific places, but rather, suggest psychic spaces that have been criss-crossed by histories and fables, dreams and nightmares. Like images about to fade from memory, these etchings possess a fleeting sense of familiarity – recalling perhaps, a memorable stretch of highway, a slasher film or a worn record sleeve – while their hyper-saturated palette and overworked texture further amplify their uncanny nature.
