Administrative History

The Montreal Print Collectors Society was formed in 1983, when A. MacKenzie Brockman and Joe King, print enthusiasts and collectors, met through a shared interest in the etchings of the Canadian artist Frank Armington (1876-1941). Brockman and King were subsequently joined by Jan Johnson, who had recently returned from London to teach a class on prints in Montreal. The three regularly met as a study group at King's home, and in late 1983, after attracting several other collectors, formed the Montreal Print Collectors Society, with a mandate to "foster the collection, preservation, study and exhibition of original prints." The first meeting of the society was held on October 25th at Kellert Hall, 5500 Westbury Avenue, Montreal, and featured a talk by Jan Johnson entitled "The Joy of Print Collecting: An Overview." As well as regular meetings, first at the Saidye Bronfman Centre, later at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and more recently at the Unitarian Church of Montreal, the group organized visits to museums, exhibitions, and artists' studios. Beginning in 1984 they produced a monthly newsletter from October to May, and the following year published a study of Carol and Frank Armington by A. MacKenzie Brockman. During the 1990s, the society organized five Montreal Print Fairs, as well as several exhibitions featuring prints owned by group members. The society also held an annual Members' Show from 1993 to 1995, culminating in an exhibition, with a catalogue, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1995. In 1997 they organized a show of forty-nine prints by thirty-two member artists at the Krasdale Galleries, New York, entitled Contemporary Prints of Members/Artists. Subsequent exhibitions of works from members' collections and by member artists were held at the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec in 2002 and the Galerie du Complexe du Canal Lachine in 2006. As of 2011 the society continued to publish a newsletter and hold monthly talks from October to May.
