Scope and Contents of the Collection
Collection consists of photographs that were submitted to Clark by various members of the Canadian Group of Painters in response to a request for photographs, in order to build up a library on members of the Group and to collect illustrations for future publications. Artists represented include Fritz Brandtner (1896-1969), Ethel Seath (1879-1963), and Kathleen M. Morris (1893-1986 ). There are also photographs and negatives of an exhibition opening for the Group (including photographs of Peter Haworth (1889-1986), Kathleen Pepper (1898-1994), Rody Kenny Courtice (1895-1973), Yvonne McKague Housser (1898-1996), A.Y. Jackson, and Emanuel Hahn (1881-1957), and of works that were shown in an exhibition of the Canadian Handicrafts Guild in 1942 (including paintings by Bertram Brooker (1888-1955), Emily Carr (1871-1945) and Yvonne McKague Housser). The collection also includes additional photographs of works by Ethel Seath, Bertram Brooker, William A. Winter (1909-1996), and Isabel McLaughlin (1903-2002 ). Correspondence regarding photographs sent by Brandtner, Seath, and Morris is included with the collection. The collection also includes ten copies of the Canadian Group of Painters Letters Patent and Memorandum of Agreement (1936) and a list of Canadian Group of Painters members (1946).

Immediate source of acquisition: Donated to the National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives by Mary Clark, daughter-in-law of Philip Clark, 1986.
