In 2008, the Volunteers’ Circle celebrated 50 years of service at the National Gallery of Canada.

To celebrate this milestone, the Volunteers’ Circle History Project compiled and published, In the Company of Friends: 50 Years of Volunteering at the National Gallery of Canada  in English and an equivalent edition in French, Des amis et des arts : 50 ans de bénévolat au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada.

Copies of the book, nominally priced,  for either edition, are available from the Gallery Bookstore or through the Volunteers’ Circle Office at 613-241-2787.

The book is used as a resource for volunteer orientation and training and as a briefing tool for National Gallery staff. It may well be useful to museum volunteers generally by providing an example of lessons learned during 50 years of volunteer experience. Volunteer managers from other fields should find the book useful as an ideas toolkit.
