Michael Snow + Jesse Stewart piano concert

Thursday 18 March at 8 pm

A free concert of freely improvised music featuring Michael Snow and Jesse Stewart. Michael Snow is one of the most acclaimed visual artists and experimental filmmakers in the world, as well as a highly accomplished improvisational pianist. He began playing New Orleans-style jazz piano as a teenager during the 1940s and 1950s in Toronto where he had an opportunity to perform with such jazz greats as Buck Clayton, Cootie Williams, Jimmy Rushing, and Pee Wee Russell, among others. In 1974, he was one of the founders of CCMC, a pioneering free improvisation ensemble with which he continues to perform to this day.

Jesse Stewart is a professor at Carleton University's School for Studies in Art and Culture. Stewart's creative practice cuts across a wide variety of media and disciplines in both the visual and sonic arts. As an improvising percussionist, he has performed with musical luminaries such as Pauline Oliveros, William Parker, George Lewis, and Evan Parker. His compositions have been performed at festivals throughout Canada, in Europe, and the United States.

Together, Snow and Stewart will weave a rich tapestry of creative improvised music, setting new boundaries for contemporary music. This concert, a collaboration between the School for Studies in Art and Culture, Carleton University, and the National Gallery of Canada, will be recorded by CBC Radio for future broadcast on The Signal.

In the Auditorium. Free admission!
