Dots, Pulses and Loops Part II

09 Jul 2008 - 09 Sep 2008

Commenting on the rise of new communication technologies in the mid-20th century, the late Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan coined the now iconic mantra “the medium is the message.” Widely misunderstood or trivialized, McLuhan’s statement makes explicit the integral relationship in media art practice between subject matter and the particular medium of expression – TV, video, computers, and electronics – that conditions its creation and the viewer’s subsequent response. This selection of works from the early 1970s to the present explores the relationship between electronic media and aesthetic experience and includes influential artists Nam June Paik, Norman White and Jean-Pierre Boyer, as well as emerging artists Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins.
