Acting the Part: Photography as Theatre

16 Jun 2006 - 01 Oct 2006

When Cindy Sherman first posed before the camera for her now famous Untitled Film Stills series in 1977, she was advancing a tradition that began with photography’s invention. Even as early as 1840, the French photographer Hippolyte Bayard was acting – playing the role of a drowned man – for one of his salted paper photographic prints. Acting the Part: Photography as Theatre is one of the first exhibitions to explore the transformation of staged photographs from the early 19th century through to contemporary practice. This exhibition includes works by Oscar Gustave Rejlander, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, Man Ray, Duane Michals, Les Krims, Jeff Wall, Yasumasa Morimura and Wang Qingsong, among many others. Organized by the National Gallery of Canada.
