J. Russell Harper served as Curator of Canadian art at the National Gallery of Canada from 1959 to 1963. His landmark publication, Painting in Canada: A History (1966; revised edition 1977), helped to define the discipline of Canadian art history. His extensive library reflects his research interests and commitment to Canadian culture.
