The Ferry, Quebec, 1907
James Wilson Morrice
Canadian, 1865
- 1924
oil on canvas
62 x 81.7 cm
Purchased 1938
National Gallery of Canada (no. 4301)
Morrice spent most of his professional life in France, occasionally returning to Canada during the winter to visit his family. The preparatory sketch was painted in 1897 and the canvas ten years later. The simple, almost naive drawing of the cliffs, boat, and figures on the wharf animates the broad areas of thinly painted and low-toned colour.
