Here the artist, who adhered to the Classical movement known as Parisian Atticism, inserts the Holy Family into a landscape reminiscent of Poussin and Claude with its idyllic vision of antique ruins set against a distant horizon. The smooth, pristine quality of the copper support covered with a white ground that is underneath the paint contributes to the luminosity of this small, jewel-like painting.
