The Boy Carrying a Tray, c. 1861-1862

Édouard Manet
French, 1832 - 1883
etching and aquatint on wove paper
36.6 x 26.8 cm irregular; plate: 24.2 x 15.9 cm
Purchased 1973
National Gallery of Canada (no. 17355)

Carefully balancing a full tray, a boy performs his task with apparent apprehension. Manet modelled the figure on a servant boy who also appeared in his 1859 painting "Spanish Riders", inspired by Velázquez. The model is the nine-year-old Léon Leenhoff, the son of Suzanne Leenhoff, Manet's future wife.
