Carefully balancing a full tray, a boy performs his task with apparent apprehension. Manet modelled the figure on a servant boy who also appeared in his 1859 painting "Spanish Riders", inspired by Velázquez. The model is the nine-year-old Léon Leenhoff, the son of Suzanne Leenhoff, Manet's future wife.
