This woodcut print was Escher's first experiment with the regular division of a planar surface. Made while he was attending the School of Decorative Arts in Haarlem, the Netherlands, in the 1920s, "Eight Heads" reveals how Escher was drawn to rhythmic repetition in the early stages of his career. He returned to this idea only in 1937.
