De La, 1969-1972
Michael Snow
Canadian, 1929
aluminum and steel mechanical sculpture with surveillance camera, electronic controls, and four monitors
installation space: 3.5 x 7.5 x 12 m
Purchased 1972
National Gallery of Canada (no. 17095)
Here the artist has taken the equipment he used to shoot his experimental film "La Région Centrale" (1970-71) and adapted it as a video installation. A stand-in for the human cameraman, the machine originally intended to make what Snow has called "an absolute record of a piece of wilderness" moves the camera in rotating arcs covering a full field of vision. "De La" allows us to watch such an image in the making.
