Hendrik Willem Mesdag
Dutch, 1831 - 1915
watercolour on heavy wove paper
47 x 57.4 cm
Gift of Hilda W. Mathewson, Ottawa, 1972
National Gallery of Canada (no. 17024)

During the summer of 1868 Hendrik Willem Mesdag became interested in what was to be his main source of inspiration for the rest of his career: the sea. Shortly after, in May 1869, he moved to The Hague, where many artists gathered. There, he studied the sea from Scheveningen, a district of the city situated along the shores of the North Sea. This lovely watercolour is representative of the seascapes for which Mesdag is renowned.
