Self-portrait, c. 1899
Canadian, 1864 - 1955
charcoal on laid paper
36.5 x 26.5 cm
National Gallery of Canada (no. 16730)
Leduc made this rare self-portrait following his brief journey to France in 1897. Its quiet intensity and a sense of poetic evocation - emphasized by the immersion of the face in dense shadows - is consistent with the aesthetic of the Symbolists, whose work impressed him during his European visit.
