- 1682

Opinions vary about the date of this drawing by Claude Gellée (known as Claude Lorrain), but it may have been done between the late 1640s and the early 1660s. The theme of shepherds leading or guarding their flocks recurs frequently in Lorrain's graphic works. Depicted in a bucolic setting, the cattle are usually a pretext for creating a certain harmony between successive dark and light planes. In this drawing, the group at the extreme right of the sheet serves as a sort of "repoussoir" to draw the viewer into the scene.
