Self-portrait with Female Nude, 1917-1918

Egon Schiele
Austrian, 1890 - 1918
black wax crayon on buff wove paper
28.7 x 44.2 cm
Purchased 1974
National Gallery of Canada (no. 17923)

Although a more familiar subject in contemporary art, the exposure of one's own naked self is exceedingly rare in the history of art. In one of the least revealing of this series of nude self-portraits, Schiele hides only his genitals and the identity of his wife, Edith, as he confronts the viewer with a self-assurance bordering on arrogance. This double-portrait was made only a year before the couple and their unborn child died during an influenza epidemic.
