White Poppy (Flowers and Brushes I), July 1946

David B. Milne
Canadian, 1882 - 1953
watercolour over graphite on wove paper
36.4 x 54.3 cm
Gift from the Douglas M. Duncan Collection, 1970
National Gallery of Canada (no. 16130)

In the mid-1940s Milne produced many floral still-lifes, which, with an energy that radiated from their centre, were explosive in colour and composition. Schaefer would borrow this compositional motif for one of his strongest images, "Carrion Crow".
