Although suggestions have been made as to the sitter of this portrait - including two fellow artists from Hals' home town of Haarlem - his identity remains unknown. It is possible that the work belongs to a group of small portraits created for personal enjoyment. In his hand, the sitter holds a branch from an unidentified plant, possibly holly.
