Archibald Lampman (1861-1899) was one of the "Confederation Poets," all born in the 1860s and whose poetry explored aspects of Canadian life and landscapes. McKenzie met Lampman in Ottawa when McKenzie was a medical doctor for the Governor General Marquess of Aberdeen. Following the poet's early death, McKenzie was commissioned to sculpt a portrait relief for a memorial at Trinity College, University of Toronto. There are three known casts of this work.
