Imaginary View of Padua, c. 1741

Canaletto
Italian, 1697 - 1768
etching on laid paper
46.8 x 61.6 cm; plate: 30.2 x 43.5 cm
Purchased 1968
National Gallery of Canada (no. 15392)

In addition to his topographical views, Canaletto also made capricci, fanciful constructions of his own invention. This is one such scene from the artist's imagination, a panorama of a walled town with buildings that recall but do not represent the city of Padua, near Venice.
