Shown for the first time in New York at the Fischbach Gallery in October 1966, this work was intended as a piece of art that “would be very close to not existing and yet exist.” Les Levine was attempting to create an artwork that would involve the viewer in a kinetic experience of the space instead of relying solely on contemplation. With the title in mind, the viewer – as collaborator – is considered the “star,” exploring the physical space within this “machine.”
