Portrait of Meyer de Haan, c. 1889-1890

Paul Gauguin
French, 1848 - 1903
polychromed oak
58.4 x 29.8 x 22.8 cm
Purchased 1968
National Gallery of Canada (no. 15310)

Gauguin has emphasized the penetrating eyes and large hands of the Dutch artist, Meyer de Haan (1852-1895), with whom he painted in Le Pouldu, Brittany. The inclusion of the bird may be intended as a visual pun, since "haan" means rooster in Dutch.
