Study after "Logging", 1889
George A. Reid
Canadian, 1860
- 1947
oil on wood
18.4 x 16.3 cm
Purchased 1964
National Gallery of Canada (no. 15183)
This study was painted from a live model, probabaly while George Reid was attending the Académie Colarossi, and specifically, its costume classes. Reid had begun the ambitious project of a scene of woodcutters at work around some enormous logs on newly cleared land. The painter was inspired by a wood yard he noticed on his ramblings in and around Paris. The position of this "Head of a Man" was transposed almost exactly to the final work, "Logging", 1889.
