woodcut on laid paper 30 x 21.4 cm; image: 29.7 x 21.1 cm Purchased 1963
National Gallery of Canada (no. 15114)
This print illustrates the scriptural account of the angel Gabriel’s announcement to the Virgin that she would give birth to Christ. In the tympanum arch overhead is a relief carving of the Old Testament heroine Judith, depicted with the head of Holofernes, a prefiguration of Mary’s victory over the Devil. The Devil himself appears chained beneath the stairs.
