Satyress before a Terminus, c. 1510-1512

Marcantonio Raimondi
Italian, 1480 - 1534
pen and brown ink on laid paper
19.9 x 17.5 cm
Purchased 1965
National Gallery of Canada (no. 14798r)

Acquired as an anonymous drawing of the Paduan school, this work is certainly of the highest quality and by Raimondi, who is best known as a maker of prints for Raphael. Distinguished by its precise fine hatching, the study was executed when the artist was in Rome, as it copies an antique Bacchic sarcophagus then found in a Roman church. This provides evidence of Raimondi turning directly to ancient art for formal inspiration, as well as source material for his engravings.
