Sailing on the Bay, 1963

Joyce Wieland
Canadian, 1930 - 1998
oil on canvas
81.3 x 25.4 cm
Purchased 1965
National Gallery of Canada (no. 14771)

In the mid-1960s, after a series of large abstract paintings, Wieland turned to smaller-format works of a figurative and narrative character. Drawing on her background as a film animator, the artist here divides the canvas into different image panes, providing a sequence of events from which the viewer can construct a story. This small vertical painting containing eight sections also reads like a filmstrip, highlighting a brief moment in time.
