"Grey Square" adopts a self-critical awareness of the materiality of the act of painting itself, with its formal rectilinear composition, stained paint application, and large scale. The work recalls the formal gestures associated with modernist abstract art, characterized by simplicity of design, line and colour, as well as an emphasis on the flat surface and frame of the canvas.
