Master of Serumido
egg tempera and oil on wood
50.5 x 65.5 cm
Bequest of Mrs. Jeanne Taschereau Perry, Montreal, 1965
National Gallery of Canada (no. 14708)

This painting has been attributed to an anonymous Florentine named by the great Italian scholar Federico Zeri as the "Master of Serumido" with respect to his most ambitious work: an altarpiece in the church of Serumido in Florence. More recently, the artist has since been tentatively identified as an obscure painter Mariotto Dolzemele. In stylistic terms, this work relates to paintings by some of the most important artists from the first decades of the sixteenth century based at the Dominican monastery of San Marco, including Fra’ Bartolomeo, distinguished by their simple charm.
