This sketch was made by Rubens directly after a Giulio Romano drawing of 1538 now in the British Museum, for the Sala di Troia in the Palazzo Ducale at Mantua. Rubens had the opportunity to study Giulio's work at the Gonzaga court during his stay there in the first decade of the 1600s. The subject is from the history of Trojan war as related in Homer's "Iliad".
