3 + 4 + 1 is an outstanding example from a series of large, rigorously abstract paintings that Borduas made in Paris. Here the artist has created a reversible image, which can be seen either as a white screen with openings that reveal a background layer of black, or as clusters of one, three, and four black shapes - hence the title - that float on the shimmering white surface.
