Édouard Manet (1832-1883) and Degas had an uneasy, competitive friendship that was never closer than during the 1860s. That period also coincided with Manet's infamy: scandal erupted over nearly every entry he made to the official Salon. In this seemingly casual portrait, Manet, looking as if he has just dropped by Degas's studio, takes an unconventional pose sideways in a chair.
