St. Bartholomew was first crucified, then flayed, and finally beheaded. Here, the martyr holds his attribute, a sword, and places his hand on the head of a prince, who - because of the partially sketched coat of arms on the right - has been identified as Frederick the Wise, Duke of Saxony.
