The High Priest Refusing Joachim's Offering, c. 1617
Jacob Jordaens
Flemish, 1593
- 1678
pen and brown ink with brown wash over charcoal on laid paper, mounted on wove paper
24.4 x 14.6 cm
Purchased 1964
National Gallery of Canada (no. 9983)
Before the conception of the Virgin Mary, Joachim, her father, had attempted to make an offering at the Temple in Jerusalem, but was rebuked and turned away by the high priest because he was still without child. The painting for this study has not been identified, but the subject traditionally appeared on altarpiece wings, which would explain the unusually tall, narrow format of the drawing.
