Manet returned to the "Urchin" subject in 1868 when he began work on this lithograph version, published only in 1874 with "Civil War". The sharp line produced by the burin needle on the etching plate results in an irregular woven texture, whereas the smooth surface of the lithographic stone results in an effect closer to drawing. Manet also scraped away crayon from the surface of the lithographic stone, adding a contrasting white line to the image.
