"These downs were the most impressive country I had seen, mile on mile of smooth lawn, tended by sheep. But they were a puzzle so far as painting went ... As it was I used stippling and hatching to mark the smoothness and evenness, and drew the camps in detail. They were unfenced and long cultivation in other days has worn down all the detail, leaving their slopes as soft-looking and subtle as flesh."
