"The whole things (scratching on the colour in this dry way and making it do the work without lightening it or darkening it) is a Scotch motive, getting the result with the slightest possible means." Correspondence, 9 April 1919 This "Scotch motive" would evolve slowly over the summer and become Milne's method of painting in watercolour until he gave up the medium in 1925.
