"You mustn't be squeamish, but this isn't a squeamish bunch nowadays. The meat scraps and potato scraps of one meal are served at the next - as hash or stew, of course ... But nobody kicks ... The whole thing is done in the open and is, I suppose, just as clean and sanitary as any other cooking. Besides, we have had a glimpse of how completely the people here are immersed in the war and have sobered up a little."
