Of a similar scene Milne wrote: "A few hundred yards beyond the Zonnebeke station I came to the German pillbox line ... I laid down my painting outfit beside the road and looked at some of them. These are all about alike - 20 feet long, about 10 feet deep and sticking up about the height of a man or a little more above the ground ... All have water inside and the pools surrounding them are filled with the endless wreckage of war, among it bones and the foul-smelling remains of bodies."
