"The only trees in all this waste were right in front of me on low ground - the Nine Elms. These were the first objective of part of the Canadian 1st Division on April 9-17 ... The lower ground here was studded with gunpits, still camouflaged and with shelters and ammunition dugouts untouched." Correspondence, 24 June 1919
