Alex Colville frequently obscures the identity of his subjects or averts their gaze. In "Couple on Beach", the male figure is depicted from the rear and the woman's face is covered by her hat. The artist composed this painting following the Fibonacci principle of a golden rectangle, with the composition revolving around the male figure. The figures depicted in this painting are the artist and his wife, Rhoda.
