During his student days at the Académie Julian in Paris, A.Y. Jackson and a group of friends went on an Easter excursion to Italy. While there, they visited Venice, Florence, and Rome, spending most of their time in galleries. Jackson's study of a charming but nondescript corner of Rome dates to this, his first visit to Italy.
