Study of Mountain Crests,
John Ruskin
British, 1819
- 1900
pen and brown ink and watercolour over graphite, with opaque white, on cardboard
25.8 x 28.5 cm
Gift of Henry R. Wilkinson, Coniston, England, 1959
National Gallery of Canada (no. 7409)
Ruskin was never a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but he was a staunch supporter. This image of a clearing on a mountain crest covered with snow appears objective at first glance, but it is suffused with energy and a profound sense of drama.
