Gabrielle and Jean, c. 1895
Auguste Renoir
French, 1841
- 1919
black chalk on laid paper
62 x 47.2 cm
Gift of Martin Fabiani, Paris, 1956
National Gallery of Canada (no. 7296)
This drawing, with its gentle rendering, the black chalk pigment blending delicately into the even grain of the paper, is a preparatory sketch for a painting of Pierre Auguste Renoir's son Jean seated on the lap of his nursemaid, Gabrielle. A distant cousin of Renoir's wife, Gabrielle Renard took devoted care of the painter's children. She soon became one of his favourite models, and later served as his nurse. Little Jean, who posed for his father repeatedly, would grow up to be a pioneer of French filmmaking.
